GeoTol Pro GD&T Fundamentals Course

Course Objectives

Students will understand the symbols and concepts of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) on engineering drawings. The participants will have knowledge on datum reference frames, form, orientation, profile, position tolerances, modifiers, and common inspection procedures. This GD&T fundamentals course is a great introductory or refresher class.

Targeted Audience: Anyone who needs to read or create an engineering drawing. This course is for mechanical engineers, designers, drafters, quality, inspection, manufacturing, tooling, production, procurement, and purchasing.

Course Highlights

  • Course developed and refined for over 40 years

Full Course Description:

This GD&T Fundamentals course is based on the latest ASME Y14.5-2018 and ISO-GPS standards. It has been presented and refined over the past 40 years to deliver what personnel need to know about GD&T and how to use it in an engineering company.

The GD&T certification training combines lectures with hundreds of animated PowerPoint graphics. The lectures are split by a series of student exercises (either individual or group) to test the participants’ understanding and to engage learners. The total training material comprises 14 units: 6 core and 8 specialized. The first 6 core units build on each other to develop a solid foundation. Select topics of the remaining specialized units are added to the core program to create a custom course that relates to company parts and participant job functions. Both the customization and student exercises make this the most practical and engaging course possible.

The GD&T fundamentals course also uses wood and plastic models to simulate parts, gages and inspection equipment. The models are used to demonstrate the physical mating of parts for engineering and design. Also, sample inspection equipment allows hands-on demonstrations of inspection as well as measurement data reporting practices.

Beyond The Standards

Relatable Examples

This program goes beyond the theory in the Y14.5 standard with relatable examples to show practical uses of the symbols and concepts. Inspection techniques with simulated inspection data show how to report the data to communicate manufacturing defects and find solutions.

Practical Student Exercises

Exercises are key to understanding a subject. This program has many practical exercises to reinforce concepts and generate effective discussions. The practical exercises are beyond simple multiple choice with design symbol application and inspection techniques/reporting.

Customizable Courses

This program is fully customizable. This program covers all topics in ASME Y14.5 from the basics, to intermediate, and more advanced/specialized topics. This allows the program leader to adjust the course based on the prior knowledge or learning ability of the participants.

Customizing the Program

This program is fully customizable, covering all topics in ASME Y14.5 from GD&T basics to intermediate and more advanced/specialized topics. This allows the program leader to adjust the course based on the prior knowledge or learning ability of the participants.

Geometric tolerancing is a general subject and can be used on a variety of applications from large parts to small parts, machined parts, sheet metal, composites, turned parts, castings, forgings, weldments, etc. While the fundamental concepts of tolerancing will remain the same, each of these applications may have its own special treatments. The program leader may customize the training by skimming some subjects while concentrating on the more applicable topics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a basic course?

It can be a GD&T basics course. However, it can be adjusted up to an intermediate or even advanced course by changing the lesson plan and pace of the course if the students are ready. All topics in the Y14.5-2018 are covered in the accompanying GeoTol Pro workbook.

How long is the course?

The full GeoTol Pro GD&T Fundamentals course covering all topics would be about 40 hours. However, we usually recommend a shorter 20-hour class and create a custom lesson plan for your group. Additional class time and topics can be added if requested

Which standard is the course based on?

The GD&T fundamentals course focuses on the ASME Y14.5-2018. Differences between the 2009 and 1994 can be shown if your company works to earlier versions. Appendix A in the book shows all differences between earlier Y14.5 standards.

This course may also be taught to ISO-GPS standards. There are minor differences between ASME and ISO and are shown in appendix B of the book. We can alter the course if your company works to ISO-GPS.

How do you offer this course?

The GD&T fundamentals course is offered in many formats:

  • Instructor-led Onsite for a group
  • Instructor-led Virtual for a group
  • Online self-paced for a group or individual
  • Public course for individuals

Do you offer a public course?

Yes, in addition to onsite/virtual training, we partner with ASME to teach their GD&T public offerings. Please see the public course schedule.
