GD&T Core Concepts – 2.5 Days (~20 hours)

Course Description: This is a basic to intermediate level course to understand foundational concepts of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). It covers tolerancing concepts on customary part applications (machined parts and sheet metal). This is a great course for either introductory or refresher for GD&T symbols and concepts.

Course Objectives:

  • Read and apply the symbols and core concepts of GD&T.
  • Knowledge on datum reference frames and constraining the degrees of freedom,
  • Application of flatness and orientation tolerances,
  • Understanding profile tolerance – applications, inspection methods and reporting
  • Understanding position tolerance – applications, MMC/LMC modifiers, inspection methods and reporting

Targeted Audience: Anyone who needs to read or create an engineering drawing: personnel in design, manufacturing, quality, and purchasing.

Content covered: Core Concepts, units 1-6 (16 hours) + select topics from specialty concepts (4 hours). See below for detailed course content.

GD&T Specialty Concepts – 2.5 Days (~20 hours)

Course Description: This is an advanced level course to understand specialty concepts of GD&T. It covers extraordinary tolerancing concepts applied to complex and nontypical part applications (large or complex machined parts, weldments, sheet metal, casting, forging, plastic, flexible components).

Prerequisite: GeoTol Pro GD&T Core Concepts Course

Course Objectives:

  • Read and apply the more advanced and specialty concepts of GD&T.
  • Knowledge of advanced datum reference frame setups, A-B, hole and slot, multiple DRF
  • Using datum targets rather than datum features on irregular surfaces
  • Understanding advanced profile tolerance concepts, composite and multiple segments, specialty modifiers
  • Understanding advanced position tolerance – projected tol zone modifier, composite and multiple segments
  • Knowing the differences between coaxial controls – total runout, circular runout, position, profile

Targeted Audience: Anyone who needs to read an engineering drawing with more complex part geometry and nontypical part applications: personnel in design, manufacturing, and quality.

Content covered: Short Core Concepts review (4-8 hours) + specialty concepts, units 7-13 (12-16 hours). See below for detailed course content.

Beyond The Standards

Relatable Examples

These courses go beyond the theory in the Y14.5 standard with relatable examples to show practical uses of the symbols and concepts. Inspection techniques with simulated inspection data show how to report the data to communicate manufacturing defects and find solutions.

Practical Student Exercises

Exercises are key to understanding a subject. These courses have many practical exercises to reinforce concepts and generate effective discussions. The practical exercises are beyond simple multiple choice with design symbol application and inspection techniques/reporting.

Customizable Courses

The multiple course options allow training flexibility. These courses cover all topics in ASME Y14.5 from the basics to intermediate and more advanced/specialized topics. This allows the program leader to adjust the course based on company parts, or prior knowledge and learning ability of the participants.

Customizing the Program

GD&T Core Concepts Course (20 hours total): Units 1-6 (16 hours) + select topics from specialty concepts (4 hours).

GD&T Specialty Concepts Course (20 hours total): Short Core Concepts review (4-8 hours) + specialty concepts, units 7-13 (12-16 hours)

The training is customizable to match participant knowledge and common company part applications. Geometric tolerancing is used in a variety of applications from large parts to small parts, machined parts, sheet metal, composites, turned parts, castings, forgings, weldments, etc. and each of these applications may need special concepts. The program leader may customize the training by skimming some subjects while concentrating on the more applicable topics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a basic course?

It can be a GD&T basics training course. However, it can be adjusted up to an intermediate or even advanced course by changing the lesson plan and pace of the course if the students are ready. All topics in the Y14.5-2018 are covered in the accompanying GeoTol Pro workbook.

How long is the course?

The full GeoTol Pro GD&T Fundamentals course covering all topics would be about 40 hours. However, we usually recommend a shorter 20-hour class and create a custom lesson plan for your group. Additional class time and topics can be added if requested

Which standard is the course based on?

The GD&T fundamentals course focuses on the ASME Y14.5-2018. Differences between 2009 and 1994 can be shown if your company works to earlier versions. Appendix A in the book shows all the differences between earlier Y14.5 standards.

This course may also be taught to ISO-GPS standards. There are minor differences between ASME and ISO which are shown in appendix B of the book. We can alter the course if your company works with ISO-GPS.

How do you offer this course?

The GD&T fundamentals course is offered in many formats:

  • Instructor-led Onsite for a group
  • Instructor-led Virtual for a group
  • Online self-paced for a group or individual
  • Public course for individuals

Do you offer a public course?

Yes, in addition to onsite/virtual training, we partner with ASME to teach their GD&T public offerings. Please see the public course schedule.
